Perhaps the best tip of all is to avoid the bad habit of following other cars too closely. Not only does that present a safety concern if that driver suddenly stops, but there is also a greater chance of potential windshield damage. Small rocks or other debris are easily flung in the air when in contact with a moving tire. If one of those rocks hits your windshield it will likely result in a chip or crack.
