Every so often readers of the Providence Journal ask The Car Doctor questions pertaining to their vehicles. One such question was asked regarding DIY windshield repair kits:
“Q: What do you think about DIY windshield chip repair kits? I have a small chip in the windshield on my car and I want to sell it, but don’t want to buy a windshield.
A: I have had mixed results with these kits. Once I used one and it worked perfectly. The second time, when the resin dried, it cracked the windshield. I now leave windshield chips to glass professionals. Check with your insurance company; some provide free chip repair.”

So there you have it. If you’re expecting good results from a DIY kit you might be disappointed. Sure there is a chance it may work, but there is a risk of doing even further damage to your windshield. Instead of a repair you could be forced to have it replaced.
